How to apply

The course is open to students from all countries and is aimed at PhD students and postdocs in evolutionary biology or related fields with no or little programming experience.

An intensive full-time course

A typical day runs from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with lectures and hands-on coding labs, followed by dinner. On some evenings we will continue with course content or study time with the teaching assistants. The course runs for 16 days including weekends, with one free day. See a typical day in the program.

After your application

  • Once you receive our acceptance, please confirm your participation within 7 days.
  • You will then receive an invoice, which is payable within 14 days.
  • Payment in two installments and extended payment terms after a deposit are possible. Please contact us by email.
  • The cancellation terms are sent with the acceptance email.

Course fee

  • Course fee 4,290 EUR
  • Teaching ~150 hours
  • Single room +913 EUR

The fee includes:

  • all course material
  • accommodation for 17 nights
  • breakfast and dinner
  • social events and optional activities on the free day

Hotel rooms are double rooms unless a single room is requested (additional 913 EUR). The course is designed for approximately 25 participants.

Financial support

We have limited funds to provide partial financial support (max. 1,300 EUR). To apply, include a letter with your application explaining how much support you need and why.

Accommodation is organized by us at the Seminaris CampusHotel Berlin, Takustraße 39, 14195 Berlin (Berlin-Dahlem). Breakfast is served at the hotel.

Rooms are available from Friday, March 5. In the evening, there is an informal get-together to meet the other participants. You have to make your own travel arrangements.

Frequently asked questions

No. This is a beginners programming course and no prior programming experience is required. If you already know some R or Python, you may still find it worthwhile to learn how to apply your programming skills to biological questions.
